Cluster Dextrin®: The Science Behind Fuel That Doesn't Weigh You Down

That heavy, sloshing feeling from an energy drink isn't about the carbs — it's about the type of carb. Here's the science behind Cluster Dextrin®, and why it fuels without weighing you down.

Cluster Dextrin®: The Science Behind Fuel That Doesn't Weigh You Down

Every athlete knows the feeling: an energy drink that sits in your stomach, sloshes with every stride, and gives you a quick hit followed by a crash. The problem isn't carbohydrates themselves — it's the type of carbohydrate. And that's exactly where Cluster Dextrin® changes the game.

The real factor: osmolality

Osmolality is the number of particles dissolved in a drink. The more there are, the harder your gut has to work to absorb it: slower gastric emptying, water pulled into the intestine, that heavy, sloshing feeling mid-effort. Simple sugar is packed with them. At the same concentration (a 10% solution), the numbers speak for themselves — Glucose: 646 mOsm. Maltodextrin: 117 mOsm. Cluster Dextrin®: just 9 mOsm. Cluster Dextrin® delivers real carbohydrates at a fraction of sugar's osmolality. The reason is physical: it's a very high-molecular-weight molecule. Few particles in solution means tiny osmolality — but a high carbohydrate payload.

Faster gastric emptying, a lighter stomach

That low osmolality has a direct, measured consequence: a Cluster Dextrin®-based drink leaves the stomach much faster than a glucose drink (around 27 minutes versus 40). In testing, it also leaves less fluid sitting in the stomach and causes markedly less digestive discomfort. In other words: the energy arrives fast, without the weight. Exactly what you need when the intensity climbs and your gut becomes the limiting factor.

Steady energy, without the spike-and-crash

Fast sugar triggers a blood-glucose spike followed by an insulin response that drops you just as quickly. Cluster Dextrin® releases its energy more gradually, without the insulin spike that defines simple sugars — and so without the reactive crash that follows. You hold your effort over time, instead of riding a rollercoaster.

What the research shows

Beyond comfort, several peer-reviewed studies back it up. Compared to glucose or maltodextrin, Cluster Dextrin® shows a longer time to exhaustion — roughly 70% longer than glucose or water in elite swimmers, a result confirmed in marathon runners. It also shows better fluid retention during effort than glucose, lower perceived effort versus maltodextrin at the same intensity, and a smaller hit to the immune system during long efforts. In full transparency: these benefits are most pronounced when carbohydrate stores are low, and study sample sizes remain modest. But the direction is clear, consistent, and documented.

Why PHN chose Cluster Dextrin®

Because we refuse the "energy versus gut comfort" trade-off. B.4.T Fuel is built on Cluster Dextrin® — a low-osmolality carbohydrate, made in Switzerland, engineered for athletes who push their bodies far and long. No sugar that weighs you down. No blood-sugar rollercoaster. Just fuel that does its job, from the first kilometre to the last. Built For This.
